No longer a literate nation

A quarter of all children at primary school in the UK will leave unable to read or write properly to join the millions of young adults who are already functionally illiterate.

The Dave Sparts in our training colleges are catatonically opposed to disciplined learning and make teachers use failed 1960s methods to instil basic skills in our children.

The ideologues refuse to accept the overwhelming success of synthetic phonics – teaching children to link sounds and letters – and insist on the ‘whole word’ method.

Children of immigrants fare better than the British-born because their parents can help them whereas many white working-class parents are themselves illiterate.

In an attempt to hide this tragedy, teachers help children cheat their way through the SATS tests and national exams are degraded to pretend leavers are fit for work.
