Time to move on

Abdelbaset al Megrahi was released on compassionate grounds based on the recommendation of the Scottish Health Director, Parole Board, and Prison Governor.

There was always a chance that sending the dying man home to his family in Libya would reduce his stress levels, improve his immune system, and prolong his life.

He has certainly received a world-class cancer treatment in Tripoli not available in Scotland and medical prediction in this area is clearly not an exact science.

Dr Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the 1988 atrocity, has again demonstrated both a humanity and common sense sadly lacking in most commentators.

It was an outrageous event but, under pressure from America, the Scots botched the investigation and trial so that the guilty verdict was manifestly unsafe and it is time for us to move on.
