Testing Times Ahead

Italy, with some of the most dangerous roads in Europe, is considering the highly controversial move of banning drivers aged over 85.

All over the Western world the first generation of massed drivers is approaching extreme old age and dementia is an increasingly serious problem.

My late father-in-law was a sufferer but insisted on driving the busy roads around Epping and my wife had the greatest difficulty having his licence withdrawn.

A blanket ban is going too far however a stringent mental examination and practical test should be administered regularly after 70.

We want no repeats of that tragedy when a young girl was killed by a dementia sufferer driving on the wrong carriageway of the Friarton Bridge.
