Remove the ring-fence

It is manifestly obvious that the huge amounts of money Gordon Brown threw into that black hole known as the NHS made little difference to patient care.

There has been a relatively small increase in front-line staff such as doctors, nurses and paramedics but a vast increase in beaurocrats to police his manic targets.

Every job in the NHS should be subject to an audit of its usefulness in delivering a health care and those which fail this test should be removed from the payroll.

As regards priorities, fringe medicine, elective procedures, procurement, failing hospitals and the ultra-generous GP contracts should all be reviewed.

If this is not done, the promise to ring-fence NHS spending will simply keep in place the former PM’s client state and do nothing to improve the service to patients.
