Path to a a fulfilling career?

Lighthouses have been in existence in Scotland in one form or another since 1635 when a beacon was lit on the Isle of May. Huge shipping losses in a succession of fierce storms in 1782 led to the formation of the Lighthouse Trust and the decision to illuminate the Scottish coastline. From the start, one of the duties of a lighthouse keeper was to keep meticulous records of the weather conditions. Logbooks containing these twice-daily weather reports are gathering dust the Scottish Met office and several museums. Climate science is chronically short of historic data so digitizing this precious resource could form the basis of an excellent Ph.D. and lead to a fascinating career.
