Rain falls in the Rainbow Nation

The murder of the white supremacist Eugene Terreblanche is hardly a disaster but it does remind us of the fragility of the post-apartheid settlement in South Africa. The ANC’s Youth League, Julius Malema, recently led college students in singing the apartheid-era anthem “Kill the Boer”. Given the fact that 3,000 white farmers have been murdered since the end of apartheid, this raises doubts about the ANC’s commitment to a multiracial future. Jacob Zuma, the South African president, appeals for calm but he has rightly been criticised for failing to keep Malema and his thuggish followers in check. Since Zuma’s own campaign song was, “Bring me my Machine Gun”, he is unlikely to be able to transform the ANC into a movement embracing all South Africans.
