Panzer Cardinal’s Smoking Gun Found

Everyone knew that a smoking gun was out there somewhere and now it has appeared in the form of a 1985 letter bearing the signature of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. In it he refuses pleas to defrock an American priest with a record of sexually molesting children, citing “the good of the universal Church”. This finally blows away the Vatican’s insistence that the Pope played no role in blocking the removal of paedophile priests. In correspondence heavy with missed opportunities Oakland Bishop Cummins warned that allowing the priest to continue would cause more of a scandal than sacking him. In retrospect Ratzinger appeared more concerned about the avoidance of scandal than he was about protecting children.
