Tory Education Discipline

School staff has been failed by a regime set up to protect the interests of the delinquent while ignoring the rights of the teacher and non-disruptive pupils. By allowing parents to appeal to a school’s governors and, if still not satisfied, to an independent panel, the authority of head teachers is hopelessly undermined. Ed Balls, the Schools Secretary, is doctrinally indisposed to make the fundamental changes needed to give teachers the protection they have a right to expect. Power must be restored to head teachers to take the disciplinary action they deem necessary, safe in the knowledge their decision will not be overruled. The Tories are promising radical action, suggesting that they at least grasp the fact that classroom discipline is the essential prerequisite for a good education.
