The Twin Monsters

At every turn, much of our society demands the soft option, rewards unrelated to their performance, and to be shielded from any consequence of failure. The twin monsters of health & safety and blame culture have produced a nation expecting to be protected from all perils and to exact cash compensation for all misfortunes. The cost of benefit payments continues to swell relentlessly and our mania for precaution imposes horrific costs on the public purse. The public sector unions demand the preservation of their pensions and early retirement, though every private sector company is slashing employee entitlements. Meanwhile, vast numbers of people waste their GPs’ time and cost the NHS a fortune by insisting on their right to personal consultations about trivial colds and headaches.
