The Doomed Airline

Far from being “the world’s favourite airline”, British Airways lies third in the UK with both EasyJet and Ryanair flying a million more passengers a year. Add in Virgin and the fact that many Brits prefer Emirates or Lufthansa or Air France, and BA starts to look like a highly dispensable fringe player. Willie Walsh is stuck with a legacy of high pay and Spanish practices dating back to BA’s days as a nationalized industry in the 1970s. Unite now has the support of the U.S. Teamsters and unions in Germany, Spain and Italy who will refuse to service BA flights using airports in those countries. These foreign unions are clearly delighted to help Labour’s paymasters destroy another British industry and have their own members take up the slack.
