New Labour’s flagship sinks

New Labour’s flagship education policy, the “National Strategies”, was fatally flawed from the outset. Instead of schools being empowered to deliver the programme, it was implemented in a top-down fashion by Whitehall. Employing the meddlesome and counter-productive consultancy outfit Capita only made things worse. Schools were enveloped in red tape and tormented by heavy-handed interventions. Like so many other high flown New Labour projects, it has proved to be an utter disaster and has thankfully been binned. Hopefully the incoming administration will simply give power and resources to schools to run their own affairs, within broad national guidelines. Head teachers should be allowed to reward good teaching, and teachers given the power to maintain classroom discipline.
