Fatuous Election Slogan

I am intrigued by Gordon Brown’s fatuous election slogan “A future fair for all” with its implication that other parties can only offer an unfair future. He clearly believes that “fairness” can be enforced although attempts by Lenin, Mao and Pol Pot suggest that incompetent political zealots simply make things worse. We are not all equal and cannot be made equal. All that is “fair” is that we all have an opportunity to excel, and to go as far as our talents will carry us. I suspect what the PM actually has in mind is a further redistribution of resources from those who have earned them to those who know their “rights”. No slogan ever won an election and it is hard to believe that this cynical inducement will persuade anyone who is not educationally subnormal to switch their vote to Labour.
