The way we were

I remember learning times tables by rote at the mining village school I attended in the late 1940’s. Looking back over my subsequent years at grammar school, university, Physics research, and now retirement I realize I still drop back to my “tables” to sort out my change faster than the super market till. It saddens me to remember that my classmates in the West Central coalfields were not only numerate but also literate because we all read the Hotspur and the Wizard which contained essay rather than cartoons.
