Passme the sick bag, Mabel!

Alastair Campbell has been advising Gordon Brown that the way to avoid the public perception of New Labour spin is to be ‘genuinely authentic’. The first result will be on view in an up-coming TV interview when the notoriously cold fish from Fife is “overcome by emotion”. Answering questions about his family which were clearly agreed in advance, the Prime Minster apparently weeps on camera. It is, of course, another shameless act of spin but Campbell apparently believes that having him emote on the telly will convince the voters he is human. The best that can be said for this ghastly charade is that it is preferable to that unearthly rictus grin.
