The greedy banality of New Labour

It is the sheer banality of the greed exposed among our MPs that is so depressing. Yet right from the start of New Labour’s disastrous era, this shambolic end was on the cards. Tony Blair and his inner circle were dazzled by Metropolitan personal and corporate wealth. In addition, his loathsome wife Cherie’s rapacious expeditions in foreign super-markets and love of jollies in the palaces of European criminals set a new low for the spouse of a PM. She will live on as the shameful example of what must be avoided. Any future Premier’s wife will be advised: “For heavens sake avoid looking like Cherie Blair.” In the same way, Gorbals Mick will be the supreme example of the sort of person who must NEVER be chosen as Speaker.
